What to do with cherries besides eating them “au naturel“?
Here’s a suggestion: Cherries – not the most usual smootie type of ingredient. However, cherries are perfect in smoothies and this combination of ingredients I bring you today is light, so smooth, and perfect either for a busy morning or a post workout drink. It takes less than five minutes to be ready and is so ultra yummy! 🙂
Let me tell you what I do when I buy cherries (which helps a lot with the preparation of a smoothie like this)?
In the beginning of cherry season I usually buy a big box of dark fresh cherries – organic when possible – and freeze a few small bags for later in the year when they are out of season. Right now, cherries are starting to disappear from the markets but I still have quite a lot of pitted dark cherries in the freezer and have been trying a few recipes with them. This smoothie is one of them.
Frozen cherries are perfect for smoothies – it really depends on how do you like them – thicker on a smoothie bowl or thinner on a glass. This time I went for the liquid version – which is perfect for a breakfast on the run.
Bananas add a touch of sweetness and thickness and other fresh greens will increase the amount of goodness. Either fresh baby spinach or even kale, will be masked well by the intense banana-cherry flavour. So don’t be afraid of blending them in. Also, cinnamon adds that litle je ne sais quoi, that uniqueness, that makes everything just so much better – so please DO NOT omit cinnamon from this smoothie – it is essential! Trust me…
So this smoothie is:
Easy, nourishing, sweet and perfect for when you are in rush as you just need to throw 3 basic ingredients in a blender and voilĂ . Smoothie ready!
This smoothie is also a rich source of Vitamin B6, copper, manganese and potassium.
